Deck Railings, Stairs & Safety Upgrades
Enhance safety and style with professional railing and stair installations and upgrades.

Safety First, Style Second
Railings and stairs are not just decorative elements. They are critical safety features that protect your family and guests from falls and injuries. A wobbly railing or unstable stair is more than an inconvenience. It is a liability waiting to happen.
We have been installing and upgrading deck railings and stairs in Tulare since 2024, and we take safety seriously. Building codes exist for good reasons, and we ensure every installation meets or exceeds those requirements. But beyond just meeting code, we build railings and stairs that feel solid and secure when you use them.
That said, safety does not mean sacrificing appearance. Modern railing systems come in countless styles that look great while providing the protection you need. Whether you want traditional wood, sleek metal, low-maintenance composite, or elegant glass panels, we can create a railing system that enhances your deck's appearance while keeping everyone safe.
Railing System Options
The railing system you choose affects both the look and maintenance requirements of your deck. Here are the most popular options we install:
- Wood railings: Traditional appearance, can be painted or stained, requires periodic maintenance, most affordable option
- Composite railings: Match composite decking, never need painting or staining, consistent color over time
- Metal railings: Aluminum or powder-coated steel, extremely durable, modern clean lines, minimal maintenance
- Cable railings: Nearly invisible sight lines, contemporary look, great for preserving views, premium pricing
- Glass panel railings: Unobstructed views, sophisticated appearance, easy to clean, highest cost
We can also mix materials. Many homeowners choose wood or composite posts with metal balusters for a combination of strength, style, and value. Others use cable or glass panels between wood frames. The combinations are nearly endless, and we help you find the right balance for your taste and budget.
Building Code Compliance
Deck railings and stairs must meet specific building code requirements for safety. These codes are not suggestions. They are legal requirements, and inspectors check them carefully.
Railings are required on any deck elevated more than 30 inches above grade. The railing must be at least 36 inches tall, measured from the deck surface. For commercial properties or certain residential situations, the requirement increases to 42 inches. We know the local codes and ensure your railings meet all requirements.
Baluster spacing is also regulated. No gap in your railing system can be wider than 4 inches. This prevents small children from slipping through or getting stuck. We measure and install balusters at proper spacing throughout your railing system.
Stairs have their own set of requirements. Risers cannot exceed 7.75 inches in height. Treads must be at least 10 inches deep. Handrails are required on stairs with more than three risers. The handrail must be graspable and mounted at a specific height range. We handle all these details so your stairs pass inspection without issues.
If your existing deck has railings or stairs that do not meet current codes, we can upgrade them to bring everything into compliance. This is especially important if you are selling your home or if you have concerns about safety and liability.
Stair Design and Construction
Stairs are one of the most challenging parts of deck construction. They need to be comfortable to use, safe in all weather, and built to last. Poor stair design or construction creates constant frustration and safety risks.
We pay careful attention to stair geometry. The relationship between rise and run affects how comfortable and safe your stairs feel. Too steep and they are tiring to climb. Too shallow and they feel awkward. We calculate the proper dimensions based on your deck height and available space.
Structural support is critical for stairs. Each stringer must be properly sized and spaced to handle the load without bouncing or flexing. We attach stairs securely to your deck frame and provide solid footing at the bottom. Your stairs will feel rock-solid when you use them.
We also consider practical details like how your stairs align with doorways and pathways, whether you need landings for long stair runs, and how to handle uneven ground at the bottom. Good stair design makes your deck more functional and easier to access.
Upgrading Existing Railings and Stairs
Maybe your deck structure is fine, but your railings are outdated, damaged, or just do not look good anymore. Upgrading railings can completely transform your deck's appearance without the cost of rebuilding everything.
We can remove your old wood railings and install modern composite or metal systems that never need painting. This eliminates maintenance while updating the look. Or we can rebuild wood railings with a different style that better matches your home's architecture.
Stair upgrades often involve replacing worn treads, reinforcing stringers, or adding proper handrails that might be missing. We can also widen narrow stairs or relocate them to a more convenient position. These improvements make your deck safer and more pleasant to use every day.
Common upgrades we perform include adding lighting to railings and stairs for safety and ambiance, installing wider stair treads for more comfortable use, upgrading to cable or glass railings to preserve views, and adding decorative post caps and other finishing touches. These changes have a big impact on both appearance and functionality.
